A weekly spring produce guide to what’s in season right now based on the contents of our CSA share, with CSA and farmer’s market recipes and inspiration.
As interest in local food has taken off in recent years, so have CSAs. But even really dedicated local eaters can be surprised, and possibly dismayed, by what actually shows up in their shares.
CSAs are in investment in a farmer, a farm, and a particular growing season. As such, farmers need to diversify. They plant lots of tomatoes and other seasonal faves, sure, but also lots and lots of hearty greens. Why? Because they’re hearty. For example, two weeks of heavy rain can wipe out a tomato harvest, while collards and kale can thrive even in wet weather. Though necessary, crop diversification can mean that a lot of strange foods show up in your weekly share. Bitter greens, leafy greens, kohlrabi, celery root, and tons of radishes are all CSA mainstays.
In creating this blog, Brian and I have always aimed to demystify seasonal eating – to make all kinds of ingredients feel accessible and fresh. So I’m glad that, after all these years, we’re digging into the CSA box with this weekly series. We hope to make seasonal eating just a bit easier, and possibly, help our readers to get excited about kohlrabi after all.
The big news in this week’s share was strawberries! Tiny, perfect, and incredibly sweet, the girls and I picked them right out of the berry patch. We also picked up a couple bunches of salad turnips, radishes, red leaf lettuce, romaine, napa cabbage, and a few heads of kohlrabi. In the garden, we have spinach, collards, and Lacinato kale all thriving. Out in the wild, honeysuckle is sweet, fragrant, and just about perfect. Finally, it’s totally cheating because I found them at the market, but fiddleheads are kicking around right now, and well worth seeking out.
