Ever since getting a bad grease burn in a samosa frying incident I have been pretty scared of deep frying. But lately I have been attempting to conquer my fears. And overcoming fear so you can enjoy deep fried apple pies might just be one of the noblest pursuits there is. OK, maybe that’s a slight overstatement. But, my friends, these things are really good. I’m afraid that from now on pies that haven’t been deep fried will seem lacking.
I modeled them after the classic McDonald’s recipe. Because those things were seriously good. And so are these. The crust is substantial enough for a hand pie, but it’s also light, buttery, and flaky. The filling is classic, and while the apples are pre-cooked, they still have fantastic apple-y texture.
I highly recommend that you give them a shot.

Thanks Kate! That’s kind of how I feel about them too.

Before seeing this I had envisioned an entire pie being dunked in a huge vat of hot oil. The thought was a tad intimidating. But this, this seems perfectly reasonable, and totally delicious. I used to love McDonald’s apple pies as a kid.
Brooklyn Supper Admin says
Kimberley-Ha! I cannot imagine deep frying a whole pie, but I’m on such a kick right now I may have to try it.

My mom made these from scratch, untill all four of us left home for school s and she used all kinds of fruit. She made fresh peach,Blackberry, strawberry, and even mincemint. She fried them in lard and placed them on brown paper bags to drain. YUM!!!!!!!!!!
Babs Boomsliter says
She also used fresh sour cherry, banana, macintosh apples, and even mincemint for Thanksgiving. I’m sure I’ve left out some fillings.

Brooklyn Supper Admin says
Hi Dee, It’s working for me, but just in case, our recipe is on Babble.com’s Family Kitchen here: http://blogs.babble.com/family-kitchen/2011/02/24/mcdonalds-copycat-recipe-fried-apple-pies/
Babs Boomsliter says
Just go to Just A Pinch and you can find fried pies and lots of great recipes. I use comstock pie filling and prepared pie crust. Belive it or not the best thing to fry these in is lard and drain them on brown papper bags. You only have to deep fry these til they are golden since the pie filling is already cooked and if you bake them, brush with egg whites and add sugar. these are just as good and so easy. Enjoy!!!!!!!
Let me know if you like my easy version.

Linda says
Can these pies be baked in the oven instead of frying?
Trying to avoid fried foods.
Brooklyn Supper Admin says
Hi Linda, I think they could be, though the frying is what gives this dough the flakiness. For flaky dough, you could sub in an apple filling for these baked hand pies: http://brooklynsupper.com/2012/04/strawberry-basil-hand-pies-the-first-blogstar-sunday-supper/#.UyMu6FFdWYk Hope that helps!
DeeDeeSanchez says
Just made them tonight… absolutely delicious!! For some reason I couldn’t find apple cider, so I used sparkling apple cider. And instead of sprinkling with confectioner’s sugar at the end, I copycat’ed (is that a word?) McDonald’s and rubbed them with cinnamon/sugar after deep frying them. I will be making these several times over! Thanks so much.
