The Saunders Brothers’ orchard is tucked right up against the Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County, Virginia; even with gray clouds looming, the views are stunning. Brian, the girls, and I visited their farm market and orchard on a rainy Saturday a few weeks back as part of an article for Saveur, tracing Whole Foods Market’s local produce from orchard to store.
Jim Saunders and his team generously showed us around the market, took the whole family out to the orchard for a tour, and supplied us with some of the most delicious apples we’ve had, not to mention sparking my ongoing obsession with Saunders Brothers’ Asian pears.

Absolutely fantastic article, Elizabeth! So well written. It certainly is a treat, a privilege I should say, to enjoy different varieties of local fruit that most grocery stores won’t carry. That’s what makes shopping at WFM so fun! Thank you for this! xo
