On Sunday, we went to Diner for some brunch. The menu was dizzying and we had a hard time deciding what to order. With some prompting from the staff, we finally decided on the chicken fried steak, served with fresh greens and heirloom tomatoes, and eggs with tomatillos and rice. And, of course, french fries.
The eggs and rice was a fantastic savory dish. I thought it sounded a little boring, and it was a simple dish, but I really enjoyed the flavors. Diner’s take on tomatillo relish was great. They went for a concentrated, salty version and it was delicious. The baby didn’t really like it, but for some reason she did really like the (beautiful) scallion garnish on the dish.
Later in the day we went for a leisurely walk in McCarren Park. It seemed the whole neighborhood was out. Lots of people were set up on blankets to hear the Yo La Tango show at the McCarren Park Pool. Summer’s almost over, and everyone was urgently relaxing.
