Memorial Day is upon us and Brian and I have big plans for the weekend. My benevolent in-laws are taking our girls for a few days, leaving Brian and me with the time to sleep in, wander a bit, and lounge by our favorite swimming hole without fear of our little ones drowning, getting poison ivy, or slipping on wet cement. I usually do my best to deny summer’s arrival right up until the time I start contending with sweat stains, but this year, I’m being proactive. Bathing suits and sun screen are in hand. Summer’s grace has descended here in Virginia. The seventeen-year cicadas are gone, but regular old ones hiss from the lush green trees, fireflies dot the evenings, and the first fruits and vegetables are ripening in our tiny garden. We’ve had a stretch of rainy days, and that’s felt right––a sort of nature-imposed time of reflection just ahead of the season of sweltering abundance.

blackberry lime cheesecake tart and my first cooking gig
New York in June always catches me off guard (though it really shouldn’t, seeing as there’s a song about it and all). Further south, June is already sweltering, with temperatures into the 90’s and humidity at full tilt. So I always begin the month prepared for the worst. But this year we’ve had endless bright days, towering fluffy clouds, cool breezes, clear, gorgeous light, and at least three rainbows. It’s hard to be stressed out when the weather is so completely glorious.
