A weekly summer produce guide to what’s in season right now based on the contents of our CSA share, with CSA and farmer’s market recipes and inspiration. This week: peaches, tomatoes, yellow onions, and leeks.
Last night, Brian and I sat on the porch and to watch the second full moon of July rise over the trees. I took a picture; it was blurry and dark and I knew it wouldn’t break the internet, but I posted to Instagram anyway because I wanted to mark the moment. The intense heat, the thrum of cicadas, all the work, and fun, of summer can be a little crazy-making. But at the end of a very long day, sitting on the stoop with a couple of beers watching a blue moon come up over our sleepy street was a chance to exhale and lose ourselves in something much larger.
Now, it’s August. By this point in the summer, I think we’re all swimming in an abundance of good, local food and doing our best to keep up. The farm share is humming along. We’ve been getting lots and lots of cukes, so last week I canned a batch of Marisa’s bread and butter pickles (from her first book, Food in Jars). I picked up enough this week to pickle a few more, but ended up eating them all in salads instead. Our share has plenty of peppers – green, purple, and mild chilis – plus potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and a few greens. After running a gauntlet of deadlines, I’m hoping to get into more canning projects. Sweet pepper jelly and tomatoes are on my list, and I’d like to make the most of the blackberries still kicking around, as well as the peaches.
In this week’s produce guide, we’re featuring a couple of favorites for early August – peaches and tomatoes – plus the first cured yellow onions, and young leeks. You might notice a few green beauties in the pictures – those are sweet, crisp summer apples. I’ll gladly share some favorite apple recipes down the line, but for now, they’re so good and fresh, I recommend eating them just as they are.
