A weekly summer produce guide to what’s in season right now based on the contents of our CSA share, with CSA and farmer’s market recipes and inspiration.
Between our CSA and our garden, the summer produce is coming so fast right now I’m feeling a bit like Lucy in the chocolate factory. This week, in addition to all the bitter greens, collards, kale and bok choy (which have all been appearing both at dinner and in afternoon smoothies so we can work through our greens glut) a few new vegetables showed up in our CSA share – carrots, potatoes, and beets. I was late to pick up, and missed the beets, but I know they’re out there and that’s something.
One of my very favorite foods is in, too – garlic scapes. They’re the flowering top of a garlic plant that farmers often remove to send more growing power to the bulb. Look for scapes at farmer’s markets or ask a grower of garlic. They’re also sometimes called garlic chives.
Fruit is definitely having a moment, too. Strawberries made a surprising comeback, despite heavy rains and super hot weather. Early varieties of peaches are in, along with sweet cherries and blueberries.
